Freshman Year // Member
My freshman year in the Honors Student Association was not my most active year. I was very nervous going into college because I had not been away from home for this long and I was just trying to find my place on campus. As an introvert, going and doing countless activities with people I barely know did not sound fun or inviting, so I admit I stayed in more than I should have. My Spring semester though, I came out my my shell as much as I wanted to and I joined Kappa Delta Sorority, Drury's Student Government Association, got a job on campus at Technology Services, and became interested in leadership positions across campus. At the end of my Freshman year, I was elected to be treasurer of the HSA and I was elated. I thought finally this was my time to hone my leadership skills and prove to myself that I could lead and be vocal about my concerns without always keeping to myself.
Sophomore Year // Treasurer
Sophomore year I went full throttle in getting involved in as much as I could. I became VP of Technology in SGA, Treasurer of SGA, and many other leadership positions that allowed me to shine as a leader. IN the HSA. I was able to present the budget that we needed to SGA as well as keep the organization on track when we wanted to host events or we needed money for trips. My first year on Executive Council for the HSA was filled with new tasks that I learned how to handle the best I could. I also got to see my friends grow as leaders and see them do amazing things through their positions as well. As a group I think we did well in our tasks and the HSA went off without a hitch. Except for the change in leadership halfway through the Fall Semester, we were able to get back up on our feet and run the organization better than before. My work as treasurer kept me on my feet and involved, making sure that the club was on task in our finances.
Junior Year // Treasurer
My Junior year I continued with my heavy workload, but as the months wore on, I realized that I needed to switch my focus to my future, rather than my present. In that, I had been elected and served as SGA's VP Student Affairs and Presiding Officer, however when other leaders from that organization started doing things that I didn't agree with, I decided it was time to step down. So I quit SGA to focus on my studies and my preparations for law school. I was still able to give my time to the HSA., however I realized quickly that it would not last into my senior year. As much as I have loved serving the HSA in the past, it got to a point where meetings went in circles and we got off task too easily. As a person with a very busy schedule, I couldn't afford the time lost. So I served out my last year as treasurer, making sure that club members always had enough money and the right tools to do what they needed to for the organization, but I was slowly distancing myself from the Executive Council.
Senior Year // Member
My senior year I chose to focus on myself and my relationships with my friends, since this would be the last year I had with many of them. We did not attend many Honors events, since we knew that these events were tailored to appeal to the underclassmen and because we were working on our futures. I am proud to say that I kept with the Honors Program at Drury all four years and that I was able to complete my Honors Degree. I have also enjoyed seeing the work the current council has done to increase their presence on Drury's campus and I am confident that the new Honors Program will continue to put students first in the years after I am gone.
